Daniel McKinney
Dan McKinney has more than 15 years of experience launching products, services, and businesses; evaluating and investing in early stage companies; and serving on the Boards of Directors of several start-up organizations. As the co-founder of Drexel Partners, McKinney helped Mid-Atlantic technology companies locate, evaluate and acquire underutilized technology from venture firms and bank portfolios. Borrowing best practices from his considerable launch experience, McKinney is focused on jump-starting early stage companies and preparing them for growth and fundraising.
Before starting Drexel Partners, Dan was vice president and officer at Safeguard Scientifics, where he was responsible for Safeguard's investments in software companies, investing $120 million. He also created Safeguard's 90-day acceleration framework that helped Safeguard's portfolio companies to create value rapidly, and he served as an active board member for many companies, successfully recruiting CEOs and CFOs and leading several business development efforts.
Prior to his career at Safeguard, McKinney spent a decade quickly rising through the ranks at IBM Corporation. There, he specialized in researching and evaluating companies for acquisition. During his tenure with IBM, McKinney netted IBM millions through the creation of a successful exit plan for an IBM business, and by developing an alliance that became one of IBM's top 20 global alliance partners. McKinney was an integral part of launching IBM's largest Internet initiative in the Financial Services industry. He also had profit & loss responsibility for another IBM business, and was responsible for launching a new software product that produced tens of millions of dollars in incremental revenue.
McKinney also spent three years serving as an audit and tax CPA at KPMG, creating the tools to determine company valuations and solve complex tax issues. While at KPMG, he uncovered millions in loan exposure for a banking client and was chosen by the firm's senior partners to lead in the development of computer models used to support a large LBO advisory engagement.
McKinney graduated magna cum laude from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in accounting. He currently serves on the investment advisory board of Ben Franklin Technology Partners. Other investment committees he has served on include BaseCamp Ventures, Profile Venture Partners, and Safeguard Scientifics.
