Job-Hunt.org’s Dirty
Dozen Online Job Search Mistakes
We've been job hunting online for over 10 years
now, and the marketplace has changed. It has become much more competitive,
and also much more dangerous. You can stand out, and you can protect
yourself. Learn from the mistakes of others in this article. These
are the most common online job search mistakes we see:
- Posting your resume without worrying
about protecting your privacy.
If you have a job, you could lose it if your boss finds your resume
at a job site. Even if you don't have a job, consider identity
theft as a serious risk.
- Using only the big name Web job
sites.
Lots of jobs and lots of competition at the big sites. Often,
a smaller site, like the local news paper or one specializing
in a profession or industry or location, has smaller employers
and less competition.

Job-Hunt.org’s Tapping the Hidden Job Market
An estimated 75% to 85% of all available jobs
are invisible because they are not posted or advertised anywhere.
Those invisible jobs are the "hidden job market."
How do you find all those jobs? You "network"
to them. And, the beauty of it is that once you've built your network,
you never need to hunt for a job again. The jobs will find you.
You help the people in your network, and they help you - person-to-person,
and personal, not impersonal at all.
There are two basic methods of networking, and
you will probably be more comfortable with one method that the other.
Using a combination of the two typically brings the best results.
2 Basic Methods of Networking:
1. Push - reaching out to the
world- is usually easier for most people to do, and often is the
quicker path to a new job (although, not by any means, usually a
quick path)! With luck this also leads to long-term friendships
and collegial relationships.
You have a network from your days in school,
both high school and college. It may take you a while to track people
down, but some schools (and most colleges and universities) offer
career services and help you put those links back in place.
